The Housing Choice Voucher program provides rental assistance to very low-income families to rent an apartment, mobile home or house from a private landlord.
Public Housing Authorities receive federal funds from U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to administer the program.
Sanford Housing Authority administers 593 Section 8 vouchers in Sanford, Springvale, Alfred, Shalpeigh, N. Berwick, Wells, Acton, Lebanon and Kennebunk.
A family that receives a housing voucher is responsible for finding a suitable apartment. The housing authority must inspect the apartment to be sure it is safe and affordable. The landlord must also agree to the terms and the rent this program provides. The family pays 30% to 40% of their income towards the rent amount.
All applications will be processed to determine income eligibility and in addition you will be required to provide photo identification for all adult household members. We ask for proof of legal residence in the United States. We will verify all income and assets stated on your application.
The housing authority will also check to see if any member of your family has a criminal background and has committed serious crimes. Family members that are registered sex offenders are not eligible for Section 8 assistance.
The Section 8 waiting list is not open all the time, we advertise in the local papers when we will open the Section 8 list and accept applications.
